LISTEN SEOUL

Seoul’s eclectic music scene weaves a vibrant tapestry.

On a cosy winter’s night in the city, sogumm brought us into her mysterious, dream-like world through the sounds of LS60 Wireless and KC92.

As a unique gem in Seoul's rapidly rising music scene, the solo artist and Balming Tiger band member offers an alternative to the polished pop often associated with her homeland. Follow along as she takes us on a meditative journey through an exclusive tracklist curated just for Listen Seoul.

sogumm, The Alternative K-pop Star

Since announcing her arrival on Seoul’s independent music scene in 2018, sogumm has been through a transformation.

The Seoul-based singer-songwriter has carved out her own corner of the alternative K-pop scene by choosing authenticity over trends, both as a solo artist and as a member of the musical collective Balming Tiger.

Discover the sounds that define sogumm’s artistry and have shaped her distinctive musical identity.

BEHIND THE SONGS

sogumm took our audience through a meditative journey of exclusive tracks curated exclusively for LS60 Wireless and KC92, sharing how each one shaped her unique sound and storytelling.

Listen along to her playlist with listening notes on Sound of Life.

GREGORIO ALLEGRI, PETER PHILLIPS, THE TALLIS SCHOLARS - "ALLEGRI (ROBERTS): MISERERE (OMITTING VERSES 7-18)"

"This piece is about seeking mercy after confessing one's sin. It was performed only in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City and because the score was prohibited from being taken outside, it was regarded as a rare and mysterious composition. Listening to it feels as though it can cleanse all sins."

NASA VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD - "THE SOUNDS OF EARTH"

"This is a track from the Voyager Golden Record, carried by the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft launched by NASA in 1977. It was created to provide an understanding about the Earth for any extraterrestrial life or future discoverers who may encounter it. I would love to work on a project for aliens in the future."

ROBERT STILLMAN - "PORTAL 1"

"I discovered this track in an album from a record store on Brick Lane in London during my tour two years ago. I listened to it over and over again the whole year. The gentle electronic sounds calm my body and mind, as if I were meditating. This music helped me heal in 2023."

TÉLÉPOPMUSIK - “YESTERDAY WAS A LIE (FEAT. ANGELA MCCLUSKEY)”

"If I listen to this song with my eyes closed, I can see the story of a person lying in a lab like scenes from a film. The mechanical sounds that appear at the end feel like they erase the sadness of my past, so I turn to this track often when I’m going through difficult times."

SIONE & SHIONE YUKAWA - "BIRDS"

"This song, in which the artists mimic birdsong throughout, has no lyrics. Perhaps that’s why I can feel its emotions more deeply. I’d like to have conversations with birds someday."

Spotlight Sessions: sogumm

On the morning of Listen Seoul, we sat down with sogumm at Lemon Seoul, a retro audio gadget shop and a space where she feels truly herself. She tells us about the origins of her creativity and how she got to a place of finally creating “purely for myself.”
